Jazz News Shirley Horn is such a mega-force in the 21'st century. She is my inspiration as to how a song (particularly a ballad) is sung within the jazz/pop idiom. I'm saddened to hear she is gravely Ill. I have fond memories of her coming into ''Twins'' (Wash. DC where Shirley hails from) when I was doing a road gig with my jazz trio. Shirley & her entourage came in the club & stayed during my performance. I was able to tell her that she was a mentor to me artistically. It meant a lot to me too, when she said how much she was enjoying what I was doing both vocally & pianistically that evening. Shirley treated me with such warmth, & I'll never forget it. On an artistic scale, I think she's the most pivotal jazz singer of this age. Her collaborations with the great jazz arranger, Johnny Mandel are a true study in jazz orchestration and vocalise. Shirley......Get well soon.....Please!
