projo.com | Subterranean Homepage NewsBuena Vista Social Club's Ibrahim Ferrar dies at 78

ferrer.jpgThe Cuban musician Ibrahim Ferrar, whom American guitarist Ry Cooder thrust to fame late in life for the Wim Wenders film Buena Vista Social Club, died yesterday in a hospital in Havana. His manager said he returned ill from a European tour Wednesday, checked into a hospital and died of multiple organ failure. He had a history of emphysema.

The July 10 AP photo above shows a diminished Ferrar on stage at the 39th Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. He might better be remembered by these photos at Google.

When notables die on a weekend, most sites acknowledge it with a wire-service obit, with staff-written appreciations to come early in the week. Chicago Sun-Times wrote its own obit.
