Esperanza Spalding gets best new artist Grammy - chicagotribune.com

Sometimes, even the Grammys get it right.

In choosing bassist-singer Esperanza Spalding as best new artist, the Grammys not only miffed Justin Bieber fans but anointed a jazz musician of tremendous versatility and potential. Moreover, at 26, Spalding commands the rare ability to woo pop listeners and hard-core jazz aficionados, alike.

She proved the point last December, when she attracted a capacity audience to Symphony Center on a double-bill with violinist Regina Carter. But Spalding was the artist everyone was buzzing about, even before she sounded a note.

Throughout a mesmerizing performance, Spalding proved she's much more than just a bassist-vocalist. Music seemed to pour out of every corpuscle of her being, and she gave voice to it through deeply expressive bass playing, hauntingly ethereal vocals, self-styled choreography and unabashed performance art.

When Spalding is at her best, the music surges uninterrupted from the low notes of her bass to the stratospheric pitches of her soprano. As songwriter, she pens profound narratives (listen to her "Apple Blossom"); as conceptualizer, she fearlessly merges pop, jazz and classical idioms (check out her "Chamber Music Society" CD of last year).

Yes, Spalding has some technical challenges ahead, especially in improving the evenness and control of her voice. Even so, she's now positioned to bring jazz to young, pop audiences that otherwise might never encounter it. Bravo.

Over the past week, news of Aretha Franklin's purported pancreatic cancer diagnosis has given her fans little hope that the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer will return to her reign as Queen of Soul.

But family members are letting the world know that the Grammy Award winning icon's return to the spotlight looks really promising.

"Aretha is doing better than expected. She has a long life in front of her and will be back in concert and on stage late spring or early summer," Franklin's cousin, Brenda Corbett, who has visited her frequently since her hospitalization, told the Detroit Free Press."This girl is doing great, and they need to stop it," she added, referring to the National Enquirer report that noted pancreatic cancer survival rates are a mere 5-10%.

Pancreatic cancer has claimed the lives of several famous people, including Patrick Swayze, Joan Crawford, Michael Landon, as well as Franklin's friend and famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti, whom she paid tribute to at a 1998 Grammy MusiCares benefit.

On Friday (Dec. 10), recent Grammy nominee and 2007 Kennedy Center Living Jazz Legend recipient James Moody died after just ten months of suffering from the deadly disease. According to his spokesperson, the jazz saxophonist and flutist, best known for his hit 'Moody's Mood for Love' was diagnosed in the Spring with the disease and died on Dec.9 at age 85.

Dr. H. Leon Pachter, Chairman of surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center, told CBS News, "It's a grim diagnosis. Overall, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer patients is 35 percent." Of last year's 43,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer in the United States, 37,000 people died from the disease, the National Cancer Institute reports.

Pachter did reveal that he's treated patients for the disease who have survived for more than a decade. According to reports, two survival success stories include Apple CEO Steve Jobs and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Franklin was expected to be released from the hospital over the weekend just in time to spend her favorite holiday, Christmas, with loved ones.

Despite the medical statistics of pancreatic cancer, her family is putting on a united front and staying very positive about her condition.

"Aretha is doing absolutely wonderful," her sister-in-law, Earline Franklin said. "All the prayers and well wishes have supported her, and she's doing well."

The 68 year-old vocal powerhouse is requesting a desire for privacy, which was breached in a phone conversation the former R&B star Keith Washington made public. The 'Kissing You' crooner is currently employed as an on-air personality at Detroit's WDMK/105.9 Kiss FM, which is owned by black-owned media company Radio One.

Corbett confirmed that Franklin will make a statement when she decides to and not at the urging of media or anyone else, for that matter.

"It's her private business, and she's just not ready to talk about it. Give her time to heal. When people ask for their privacy, respect them for that," Corbett added.

As previously reported, Franklin underwent a surgery on Dec.2, which had not been publicly announced but made national headlines after city council members held a public vigil the night before the operation.

A medical surgery known as the whipple procedure, where the head of the pancreas, gall bladder and parts of the stomach and small intestine are removed, is the only way to cure the disease.

Through her current spokesperson, Tracey J. Jordan, Franklin issued a statement saying, "The surgery was highly successful. God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country. God bless you all for your prayers!"

Christian McBride, the multi Grammy award-winning bassist, likes to say that jazz is a lifetime journey of learning and discovery.
For the past two weeks, dozens of young people hopped on that road, and they did it alongside some very impressive musical company. More than 75 youngsters spent their late August summer vacation practicing their instruments, learning new compositional and improvisational techniques, and sitting in on workshops featuring some of the top jazz working professionals who make their homes in Montclair and nearby towns. It was all part of the Jazz House Kids (JHK) Summer Camp and it unfolded every day beginning on Aug. 9, in The Salvation Army Montclair Citadel on Trinity Place.

Jazz stars to bring Latin spice to Taipei this September - The China Post

TAIPEI -- A series of jazz concerts featuring world-renowned Latin jazz musicians from the United States and Cuba will be held Aug. 17-Sept. 10 at the National Concert Hall in Taipei.
This is the 8th year that the National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH) is holding the event, and all the musicians involved play an important role in the development of jazz music worldwide, said one of the organizers.

Saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, who has won nine Grammy awards, will lead his group, the Paquito D'Rivera Quintet, in the opening performance of the event.

“Sixty-two-year-old D'Rivera and 69-year-old Chucho Valdes are from Cuba. They brought Latin jazz to America and added important elements to American jazz,” Taiwanese musician Stacey Wei said Tuesday.

Wei, who has studied jazz in New York for several years, also said one of his teachers was a student of D'Rivera and described him as “not only the best saxophonist but also a prominent clarinetist in the modern jazz world.”

Jazz Musician Al Jarreau Hospitalized, Listed in Critical Condition | TheCelebrityCafe.com

Jarreau collapsed during a concert on Thursday night in Barcelonnette, France

There are only two recording artists in the history of the music industry to have been awarded with Grammys in three separate musical categories. One is the late “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson, and the other is Al Jarreau, who has been honored in the categories of jazz, pop and R&B.

According to Reuters in the UK, Jarreau collapsed during a concert on Thursday night in Barcelonnette, France as a result of respiratory problems. While he was preparing to perform at the jazz festival, he experienced a dangerously fast heartbeat and received treatment at the concert venue for multiple hours. The “Boogie Down” singer was eventually transported to an intensive care unit via helicopter.

Deputy head of the Gap hospital, Maurice Marchetti, commented on Jarreau’s condition by saying, “He was rushed to the hospital ... his condition is critical. He’s in intensive care. He is still conscious but slightly drowsy because of the medication and the breathing apparatus.”

CNN has reported encouraging news courtesy of the singer’s publicist, who released a statement on Friday that reads, “He is now awake and his first question was to enquire about his wife, Susan, and his second question was to ask about his tour dates. He is always thinking about other people.”

Fortunately, Jarreau’s condition has been stabilized and he hopes to return to performing in the near future.

PARIS – Singer Al Jarreau has been taken to a hospital in France with breathing problems.
A hospital in the Alpine city of Gap says the 70-year-old fell ill before a concert Thursday at a jazz festival in the French town of Barcelonnette.
Hospital official Maurice Marchetti said the Grammy Award winner is still in the intensive care unit Friday and his condition is "worrisome."
Jarreau, who started out in jazz before crossing over into pop and R&B, is in the midst of a European tour. It is unclear whether he will be able to make other stops planned for July, in Germany, Azerbaijan, Austria and Slovakia.
