Allaboutjazz.com, the web's largest Jazz site, joins the Podcast revolution with the debut of the “All About Jazz Podcast,” featuring saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins. Produced and hosted by Bret Primack, the AAJ Podcast showcases artists and their new CDs, with both interviews and audloclips included. Upcoming AAJ Podcasts include programs with Denny Zeitlin, Hendrik Meurkens and French singer/songwriter Oscar Lalo.

“We're excited to join such artists as D.D. Jackson and Robin Eubanks as of part of the growing community of Jazz people who are doing their own Podcasts,” reports Primack, who in addition to being an AAJ Contributor, also produces Rollins' website. “Podcasts are great content vehicle, and represent a dynamic way to reach new listeners.”

For those new to the medium, Podcasting is a method of publishing audio programs via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed of new files (usually MP3s). It became popular in late 2004, largely due to automatic downloading of audio onto Ipods, portable players or personal computers. Podcasting is distinct from other types of online media delivery because of its subscription model, which uses a feed (such as RSS or Atom) to deliver an enclosed file.

Primack explains that “Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated radio shows, essentially radio on demand. With digitial technology in the hands of everyone these days, and the Net being such a easy distribution medium, we're going to see more and more Podcasts. Traditional radio has become so dominated by corporate interests, with Clear Channel imposing a sort of cultural censorship on American radio, that many listeners are seeking alternatives. Hence the popularity of satelite radio and streaming media. The sad truth is that many people cannot find Jazz on their local radio dial.”

In addition to his AAJ duties and production of Sonny Rollins' website, Primack is also developing Podcasts with Joe Lovano and Billy Taylor. “Technology and the Net are constantly evolving, and it's important to utilize the latest tools for both marketing and distributing content. I hope more Jazz artists and labels begin using Podcasts, streaming media and video. Those who don't, run the risk of getting left behind. The old music business paradigm is quickly becoming obsolete.”
